Are Oklahoma City coyotes dangerous to cats, dogs, or other pets?
Considering the average male adult Oklahoma City coyote weighs in at up to 60 pounds he probably considers anything that is edible that weighs in up to 25 pounds as prey. We do know that coyotes will hunt cats for food though they have been known to hunt dogs that is less likely, the really scary part about coyotes is that they have been known also to hunt small children. You probably live in an urban area and have never seen a coyote when you live, but I have to tell you that doesn't mean there are no coyotes where you live, in the past 30 years more of more coyotes had moved into urban areas and taken up residence and one thing coyotes are very good at is being “invisible”.
If you own a cat the absolute best way to protect it from being eaten by an Oklahoma coyote is to keep it indoors, because if you live in an urban area your local coyotes have most definitely already been praying on the local feral cat population so your cat looks the same to them. If you must let your cat out you should direct what are called cat posts, this is not complicated, it is basically a 10 to 12 feet high wooden post somewhere in your yard that your cat can use as an escape route, cats have no trouble climbing a wooden post but at 10+ feet high it is beyond the reach of a coyote. Another way to discourage the coyotes is to make sure that no food or water is left out for them or your cat.
Most Oklahoma City coyote attacks on domesticated animals occur because the coyotes are living close to people and their pets, the coyotes become what is called “habituated to people”, that means they lose the fear that they should have of people. You may have seen pictures of people in public parks in broad daylight eating at tables with a coyote or two just resting under a tree and watching from a range well inside 50 yards, those coyotes have absolutely no fear of the humans when in reality they should be very fearful.
One thing everyone should do is if you find out you have Oklahoma coyotes living close to you and they are losing their fear of humans, you should help them relearn that humans are at least very annoying, one of the best things I've seen to this is a miniature airhorn, they hang around your neck on a chain and coyotes absolutely hate them, they literally frighten them senseless.
