Methods to trap Oklahoma City flying squirrels

A. About flying squirrels
Oklahoma City flying squirrels are members of the small and medium sized-rodents. They are noisy creatures that live in the dark attic of the houses and jump from place to place which makes it difficult to trap them. Their flight in the air is enabled by their long tail and limbs which also contribute in steering directions. They are omnivores and mostly feed on insects, larvae, small birds' eggs, grasses, fruits, nuts, vegetables etc. Another of their characteristic is that they are nocturnal creatures which give them the advantage of entering houses at night through holes and chimneys without anybody noticing. They live in the attic of the house because it is comparatively dark and provides the most suitable environment for their survival and breeding. The flying squirrels are difficult to be captured because they are hardly present on the ground except for their search for food.

B. Techniques to create a trap for the squirrels.
Though Oklahoma flying squirrels are laborious to confine, there are some ways that can be useful to do so. Exclusion traps or funnels can be used in this case. These traps should preferably be made of mesh wires with small holes because in most cases a flying squirrel is able to squish through a small hole. The traps used, should be of proper size, that is they shouldn't be too large as because it might hurt the squirrel. Inside the trap, the squirrel should be presented with a bait made of all its edible substances such as worms, fruits, vegetables, various nuts etc. This helps in attracting the squirrel quickly into the funnel leading to its entrapment. The design of the funnel should be such that it should enable easy entry of the squirrel into it, but a difficult exit from it.

A few other methods that can be tried to entrap flying squirrels include fencing, light and sound and sealing. Fencing can be used as a method to trap flying squirrels but they do not work most of the time because the squirrels are capable of flying and jumping to escape into the trees in the garden and lawn from where they easily enter the attics. Unknown and intense sounds and light can be used to keep the squirrels away, but this too doesn't work for long as they soon become used to it and stops fearing it. Finally, sealing the holes, chimney mouths and ventilators from where the squirrel enter can be effective to discourage the entry of more squirrels, although this method does not contribute much in trapping the existing ones.

C. Need to trap flying squirrels
Oklahoma City lying squirrels move away from the attics mostly when they are pregnant or carrying their offsprings. It is usually the females who fly around and stick to their babies for some time. They exist in groups during this time because the rest of them helps the mother in taking care of the child. Although they do not directly pose any threat on human beings or other animals, but sometimes they can be carrier of fatal diseases like rabies and typhus. Therefore they must be trapped at the right time and relocated at a distance of atleast 10 miles from a house so that it becomes difficult for the squirrel to return.
